The "Denim" Cabinet

I've been having a hard time bringing myself to blog with everything that is going on in California with our fires.  I live approximately 80 miles south of the Napa area and to say that this has hit close to home is an understatement.
Thank you to everyone that has donated their time and money to help with this devastation.
Please continue to pray for the lives that this has affected.

A couple of months ago I came across this little cabinet on Craigslist.  I wish I would have kept a picture of it in its original state but I didn't.
It was a reddish brown wood color.  Not very pretty.
What attracted me to it where its turned legs and carvings.
I talked the seller down to a decent price because it had been listed for a long time with no bites.

I brought it home and it just sat in my garage for days....
until finally inspiration struck!

This is a piece from pottery barn and I love how it resembles denim to me.  That's the inspiration I needed to get started on the cabinet.

I did a search on Pinterest to see if there were any pieces painted with a denim look and I came across the above kitchen cabinets.  I used both pictures above as my inspiration for the cabinet.

I started out by first painting the piece with a navy blue latex paint I had on hand.
It took two coats to get the full coverage I was after.

I then spray painted (yes spray painted) the carvings and edges of the piece as well as the turned legs with gold spray paint.

I went over the piece with one coat of Miss Mustard Seed's artissimo milk paint and then heavily distressed it with 220 grit sand paper.
I sealed it with Miss Mustard seed's Tough Coat.

Here she is all finished!
I love how the gold is peeking through.
Doesn't she look like your favorite pair of faded jeans?

It's silky smooth to the touch.  These pictures truly don't do it justice.

I left the inside original.  I wiped it down with some hemp oil and that really revived the wood.

I really want to keep this piece but I don't have a place for it.  (big sigh)
I staged it with a few fall pieces.

Speaking of Fall... my home is decorated and ready for Fall!  I'm hoping to get pictures taken and will be sharing my Fall Home Tour soon.

The "Denim" cabinet is currently for sale at the Rancho Co-Op where I'm a vendor.

Thanks for stopping by!

Transformation Tuesday ~ Beach Waves Dresser

Where do I begin....

There are no words for the tragedy that our Country has suffered. As I watched the footage from the Las Vegas shooting yesterday, I felt numb.

Today I watched with tears streaming down my face as they released the names and pictures of some of the victims that were killed.  All we can do is pray.

We need Jesus.

I contemplated not posting today but then the shooter wins.
We cannot stop living our lives.
We must move forward.
We will never forget.  We will continue to pray, but we will also not give the shooter anymore power.

Friday Favorites ~ Painted Pieces

Good morning!  Happy Friday!!
I'm super excited to share some news with you...
I'm going to be a vendor at a co-op in my area.  It's called the Rancho Co-op and it's in Oakley, CA for those of you in my neck of the woods.

They carry beautiful antique furniture and lots of other antique items.  My space is going to be predominately painted furniture pieces.  I will have some "Little's" in the space as well.
I'll be moving in next week!!!!

I cant' wait.  It's a little scary, a little exciting, a little nerve wracking!

Crazy, right?

I'll be sure and post some pictures of my space when it's all ready to go.

Because I've been busy painting pieces, I've been scouring Pinterest and other sites for inspiration.
Today's favorites are of some of the painted pieces of furniture that have me smitten!

All of the pictures have links to the sources below them.  Feel free to click on them to see how they painted these pieces.  The "before" pictures are always fun to see too!

Friday Favorites ~ Fall Crafts

Happy Friday!!!

It's 100+ degrees here in California so it is really difficult for me to talk about that 4-letter F word that is all the buzz right now....

Truth be told, as much as I LOVE Summer... I'm getting really excited about Fall!
The idea of big chunky sweaters, crisp cool mornings, pumpkin everything and Fall decor gets me giddy!

Today I'm sharing my favorite DIY Fall Crafts.

The Thirty Minute Challenge

Hi Ya'll!!

I know...
I know...
I've been MIA for quite some time.

I'm sorry but sometimes life happens and well, there was no time for my blogging hobby!
I'm back!!!!!!!! (in my Arnold Schwarzenegger voice) and yes I had to google the spelling of his name!  :)

And for the record, just because I wasn't blogging that doesn't mean I haven't been a busy little bee!
I have oodles of projects and things I can't wait to share with you.

Today, however, I want to talk about the 30 minute challenge.

I read this quote the other day and it really spoke to me...
It's so easy to focus on what we didn't get done yesterday, or stress about tomorrow, when what we really need to be doing is focusing on today!!

Happy Mother's Day 2017

I discovered my purpose the day that my daughter was born.
I felt such an immense love for her.  A love I had never experienced before.  I knew at that moment at 6:08am on January 12th, 2001 that she was the reason I was created.  I was created to be her mom.

Sixteen years have gone by and my love has not wavered or lessened it has only grown deeper for her.  I'm in awe of her.  I'm blessed to get a front row view of all the things that God is doing and is going to do in her and through her.  She's my beautiful girl inside and out and I'm one proud mom.

In 2004, I did the whole delivering a baby thing again and this time it was a boy.  I didn't think I could love anyone as much as I loved Karissa but "boy" was I wrong!  My big 8 pound Brayden who was born 7 days early captured my heart that Saturday morning in July.  He's my sweet, fun-loving kid and I could never imagine my life without him in it!  I sometimes pinch on earth did I get so lucky?

Well, we all know that it isn't luck.  This mom thing as wonderful and beautiful as it is has its moments.  And as much as I LOVE being a mom, I'm human and I'm far from perfect and I will make mistakes.  However, today I want to share some things that I think do work!  Some things that I've learned along the way.  Some little "mom nuggets!"

1.  LOVE WINS.  I know this sounds like a given.  Every mom thinks their kids know they are loved.  And that may be true and to be honest it's easier when they're little and sitting on your lap to tell them how much you love them.  However, I make it a priority to tell my kids how much I love them.  How proud I am of them.  That there is NOTHING in this world that could ever change my love for them.  I tell them that no one will ever love them as much as I do!  I know you're rolling your eyes at me!!  But ladies and gentlemen it's the honest-to-God truth!!!  Besides God, no one will love them as much as I do!  And that is a FACT!  side note: when my mom passed away in 2009 I hurt immensely and one of the reasons was because I knew that nobody would ever have my back like my mom did.  another side note: if you are not on speaking terms with your mom; FIX THAT!!  Life is too short and you need to LOVE and respect your mom.  You can still have boundaries...but LOVE wins every time!

2.  Be REAL and be FLEXIBLE.  My kids know that I will always try and keep it real.  When they ask me the "hard" questions I try to give them honest answers.  And when I don't know the answer, I tell them that.  When I was growing up, there was this "my way or the highway" mentality in parenting.  I try to be flexible with my kids.  Sometimes they ask me if they can do something and my immediate response will be no and other times it's more of "let's talk about it a little more and come to a decision together."  I know that doesn't make sense to do with 2 year olds!  lol But for those that are parenting teens or preteens, I feel like this type of parenting earns mutual respect.

3.  Spend QUALITY time with your children.  My mom was really good at this one.  Her love language was quality time so it came easy for her.  She would call the school and tell them I had an appointment and then take me to lunch or we'd go shopping and have a girls day, etc...  Quality time is not my love language so it is something I have to be purposeful about.  There are so many things pouring into your children; social media, friends, television, teachers... the list goes on and on... you're not going to be the ONLY voice in their ears just be the LOUDEST voice in their ears!  I cannot stress how important this one is.

4.  Let your ACTIONS speak louder.  Ok, I'm not going to lie...this one is the hard one.  I think we can all agree that our end goal is to raise good, God-loving human beings that will contribute to our world in a positive way, that will have fulfilled their God-given purpose while here on earth, that will have used all of the talents and gifts they were given to further God's kingdom...
So my question would have to be are you modeling that for your children?  What you "do" is so much more impressionable than what you "say."  Lead by example.

5. Pray, pray and pray some more.  We can't be with our kids 24/7 but God can.  There is something really special about a mother's prayer.  God has spared my life of many things because of my mother's prayers.  I believe that with all of my heart.  Prayer is my super power.  :)

Thank you for letting me share my two cents!

To all my friends who are Mothers I applaud you, I have mad respect for you, I'm cheering you on!!  To all of the "mom influences" I've had and currently have in my life, I thank you.  To all of my friend's whose moms are in heaven, I pray that God wraps his loving arms around you and gives you the strength not just on Mother's day but every day.

From this momma to you, Happy Mother's Day!

That One Rainy Day...

I live in Sunny California.
I love Sunny California.
Except for the fact that it hasn't been SUNNY!!!
It has been cold and rainy.
That's what I have to say about that...

Well, on one of these cloudy, rainy days I decided to paint my coffee table.  How it all went down:

It was 5am and my internal alarm went off and I couldn't sleep anymore so I went downstairs, made a pot of coffee, curled up in a blanket with my Bella and sat on the couch ready to watch a movie.

While I sat there watching Forces of Nature, I caught a glimpse of my "orange" coffee table and thought, "Why haven't I painted this thing?"

There's no time like the present so out came the paint or should I say paints!!

Often times when painting a piece in my house, I don't have a clear vision and just play with paints and decide as I go...  This day was no different!  So I used a little chalk paint, a little milk paint and then some more chalk paint until I finally got the finish I was happy with.

In my opinion, the best way to get all of your layers of paint to come through is by lightly sanding your piece.  In the picture above only the right side has been sanded.  You can see how beautiful it looks with all of the different paints coming through.

Here's a quick before and after....
The table isn't finished. I still need to paint the legs.  I'll come back to it and share the finished product soon!

In other news... the sun is finally shinning again here in California!!

Thanks for stopping by!

The Sleep Room

Happy Thursday y'all!!

Thank you for all of your sweet comments regarding yesterday's post.
Today's post has a lot to do with the Green Room that we talked about yesterday.

Inside of the green room at my church there is a little room that my pastor's wanted to convert into a sleep room or "rest" room.

Dusty Rose in the Green Room

Remember the "green room" we talked about in this post?
Well, I was asked to make it a little "girlie" in preparation of our upcoming women's conference.

Pastor Dianna's only request was that I add some blush pink to the space.

Simple enough...

Friday Favorites ~ Spring Mantles

Happy Friday!!

I've put the Valentines Day decor away and am starting to pull out the Spring stuff and have that on the brain so I'd thought I'd share some of my favorite Spring Mantles I've come across.

I'm currently working on a very fun Spring mantle and can't wait to share that with you next week!

I hope these pictures inspire you to start decorating for Spring!

I love this vignette that DIY Show Off created.  That wood mantle is delicious!

I love everything about this mantle that Adventures in Decorating created.  Let's be honest, I just want that beautiful white mantle with all the moldings and wood work.  Gorgeous.

Home by Heidi does a great job at keeping her Spring mantle neutral.  Something I always love.  That clock though!  Am I right?  Beautiful!

A Spring mantle doesn't always have to be about bunnies and eggs as Carie from Thistlewood Farms demonstrates here.  I love the simplicity of this mantle.

Coastal Charm does a beautiful job at decorating this faux mantle.  Loving the Spring St. sign.

I love that ciaonewportbeach just pulls things from her everyday decor to create this pretty Spring look on her mantle.

I love decorating with photos so I love that these beautiful photos were used to create a fresh Spring mantle.

I love how fresh Worthing Court makes her mantle look.  It's simple yet stunning.  That paper bag filled with flowers...LOVE!

Thank you for stopping by!  I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
I have a busy weekend ahead of me but I'm grateful for all these things that make my life busy.  A friend of mine recently shared this quote with me:

Wow!  So true!

I'm grateful for all of the ways my family and friends enrich my life and help keep me busy!
Someone asked me the other day how I stay sane through all of the craziness... Lots of prayer and worship music!  lol
Speaking of music...
These songs have been on repeat the last couple of days and I thought I'd share them with you.

Life Lately: February Recap

Life is CRAZY right now!!!
Remember that time that I said I was going to
s    l    o    w
down and say no to things and people!  Ya, me either!

I'm not complaining!  I'm grateful for life and all of my many blessings.  The sun is shining here in California after what has felt like years of rain and that alone makes my heart happy!

But in case  you were wondering....
Here's what I've been up to!

1. I've been designing a sleep room for my church.
I had two brick panels installed and I've been busy painting each brick and grouting it like I did in this post here.
I will be posting the entire transformation soon!

2.I've been watching my son play 6th grade basketball for his middle school!  Monday was their last game.  They had a wonderful season and it was fun to see how much these boys improved since their first game.

3. I've been making paper flowers.  I can't wait to show you why I've been making these giant flowers and the inspiration behind them!

 4. I've started decorating for Spring!  I love Spring and have started decorating and crafting for it.  Look for my Spring House Tour soon!

 5. I'm hosting a small group!  What is that you ask?  So glad you asked!  Come back in a week or two and learn all about my Pinterest Inspired Crafts Small Group.

6. I'm transforming the green room for our RUN women's conference.  Blush is all the rage right now and that is what color scheme I'm using for the green room at my church.  Stay tuned for pictures...

7. I'm painting furniture!  I'm doing what I love most....painting and transforming furniture.  Can't wait to show you this transformed coffee table.
8. I've been watching my kid hit home runs! Our travel baseball Spring season has started.  It's one of my favorite times of the year but it's also very time consuming.  We play 2-3 tournaments a month.  Tournaments are 2-3 days long and consume our weekends.  So much fun.  This year we're traveling to Cooperstown in New York for a tournament and I cannot wait!

9. I'm posting fun pictures on Snapchat!  Come follow me on snapchat and get a true glimpse into my life!  drgp1 is my snapchat name.

As always, I appreciate you stopping by!
