Mix and Match in Miss Mustard Seed's Bergere

 

I'm so excited about this new piece in my dining room.  (Sorry for the low quality pictures by I'm still having camera issues!)  :/

 

 

I've had this beautiful desk/armoire in my dining room for a while but it just wasn't fitting the space well.  It was too big.  I tried to convince myself that I could make it work because I loved the piece so much but finally came to the realization that it had to go.

 

I sold it to a good friend and that made parting with it so much easier.  I love when my pieces end up in my friends homes.  Then I know I can visit them anytime!  :)

 

 

Once the piece was gone I tried to fill the space in my dining room with other pieces of furniture that I had but nothing fit quite well.

 

I guess that meant shopping was in order!  I know... twist my arm! 

 

I thought about buying something new but I was more interested in buying something I could add my touch to so I started my Craigslist search.

 

I knew that I wanted it to be tall and not too deep.

 

The first thing I found was this little green cabinet.  I fell in love with the vintage window and for $40, I just couldn't pass it up!  I had a heck of a time loading that thing into my SUV all by myself though!  Whew!

 

Ok, so now I had the top of my buffet/hutch.  Now I needed to find a bottom.

 

I found the perfect little piece on Craigslist.  It was in fair condition and it was the perfect size.  I loved the simple lines and for $20 it was a done deal.

 

I got it home and placed the cabinet on top of it to see if it would work and viola!  Perfection!  Well, almost...

 

The green and brown wasn't going to work so out came the paint. I (my husband) also needed to cut off the legs to the cabinet so that it would sit flush on the buffet.

 

Miss mustard seed milk paint in bergere was what I envisioned for the pieces.

It's a bluish/grey color.  I know what you're thinking another blue piece of furniture in your home??  I felt like the space could handle it with all the white and brown I had going on in there.

 

 

I took the door/window off and painted the inside of the cabinet white.

 

I LOVE how it turned out.

 

 

 The bottom piece had this ugly and dated contact paper lining the drawers.  I peeled it off and wiped the drawers clean for a fresher & cleaner look.

The first coat of milk paint is always scary.  It looks like this...



stick to it, don't get nervous.  After the second coat it looks so much better.


 

Below is the before and after with the original hardware.

 When I took these pictures I noticed the drawers looked slightly darker than the rest of the piece.  I didn't like that, so I added one more coat of paint to the drawers.  Much better!

These pictures were taken at different times of day and you can see how the color changes.  It sometimes looks grey and sometimes blue.  Love that about it.

 

The last thing I did was add new coordinating hardware.  I usually try to keep the original hardware on a piece but the change makes these two pieces come together nicely.

My dining room is almost complete!  I've ordered an area rug and then I think the room will be done!

Motivational Monday ~ When you lose someone you love

My love for design and my appreciation for beautiful furnishings and home goods come from my mother.  Although, our tastes are drastically different, the core of why I love to have a beautiful home comes from her.

 

My mother found immense joy in decorating and maintaining a beautiful home.  Both the inside and outside of our home.  The outside part hasn't rubbed off on me yet...

 

My mom passed away in 2009 and my heart aches the same today that it did then. 

 

I miss her.

 

I think she would have liked my blog.

 

I think she would have appreciated the love that I've poured into my home.

 

Last week I reached out to a friend who recently lost a loved one.  I shared with her that it's hard and I get it.  I wasn't sure some mornings if I could get out of bed because my grief had turned into depression.  It was a tough, tough time in my life.  I told her I loved her and that I was praying for her.

 

Here's what I want to share with you:

 

First and foremost, the Joy of the Lord is my strength.  That's what the Bible says and I believe it with my whole heart.  I wouldn't have been able to get through the loss of my mother without my faith and my relationship with Jesus.

 

 

 

Life does go on.  I know that sounds harsh when your in the middle of grieving but it's true.  My mother wouldn't have wanted me to stop living.  I believe we honor those that have passed on by living our best life possible.  Make yourself get out of bed.  Go through the motions and the emotions will follow.

 

 

Surround yourself with family and friends.  Depression makes you want to isolate yourself but healing comes from surrounding yourself with people who love you.  The medical field is realizing that healing isn't just about medicine it's also about something greater.  It is about the love and energy your body receives from other people.

 

 

Exercise helps.  I know that sounds crazy but it is scientifically proven that exercise releases endorphins that trigger a positive feeling in your body.  I talked a little about this here.

 

Finally, I just want to say if you know someone who has lost a loved one, love on them, send them a card, make them a meal, do whatever you can to add a little sunshine in their life.

I'm so grateful for my family and friends that supported me during that time in my life.  It made all the difference in the world!

DIY 40th Birthday Celebration

An Elegant 40th Birthday Celebration



In a recent post I stated that I have the best friends. 

 And I meant every word.  I really do.

 

 

One of my beautiful friends recently turned 40 and her husband asked if I would help him decorate her party.  I immediately responded yes.

 

 

I scoured the internet for some inspiration but there was very little to be found.

 

 

My vision for the party was a little more elegant than what I was finding online.  Most of the "40th" birthday posts were a little cheesy and that wasn't at all the look I had in mind.

 

The party was going to be in the backyard and the first thing I knew we had to do was string some lights under the overhang.

 

 

Nothing screams elegant and beautiful better than twinkling lights.

 

I love the lights that Nils purchased at Costco.  They're not only timeless, they're also a great buy.

 

Nils and Cheri were expecting about 75 guests so the next thing was to rent tables, chairs and linens.


 

This may not fit into everyone's budget and I get that.  If it doesn't, then I recommend borrowing folding tables from friends.  I love the look of round tables and for about $10 a table, I think they are worth the money to rent. 



We also incorporated her existing patio furniture which helped with the budget.

 

Why rent linens?  I thought about purchasing the linens so that we could use them again and again, but it is just so much more cost effective to rent them.  I love that you can pick the color you want.  In this case, I chose lilac.  If I had purchased the linens it would have been triple the cost. 



For some of the other tables I used some turquoise vinyl tablecloths that I had.  Vinyl tablecloths don't seem very elegant but when you add all of the centerpieces it fancies it up a bit.

 

 

 

 

 

 I shopped for some accessories at home!  :)  A great money-saver is to use the stuff you already own!
Frames, vases, jars, candle holders, typography....

The #40 & FAB were all new items!

 

 

Each table was uniquely decorated.  I used mirrors and frames as the base and then added the accessories to fill the tables.

 

 

 

 

I asked the birthday girl for photographs that pictured her with family and friends.

I purchased some frames but mostly used frames I had at home to showcase these beautiful pictures!

This is a great way to personalize a party but still keep it looking elegant.

 

 

Another way to keep cost down is to mix real and silk flowers.  Use what you have!

 

 

 

No birthday is complete without a few selfies!  This is the birthday girl and I taking a selfie!

I didn't want to neglect the pool, so I inserted a glow stick in a balloon and placed it on the water.  It created a fun little glow.

 

 

 

 
 

 I brought over a little side table that I had at home and used the bird cage for the birthday cards.
